Not retired yet but went through a similar thing and we talked about all of our criteria and which ones were higher or lower priorities and what our concerns were. I really wanted to move to the middle of nowhere but given our criteria and concerns we ended up in a rural area near a smaller city. You’re not unreasonable to want specific things about where you live, like easy access to healthcare or a sane government, you just need to figure out what both of you can compromise on.

Its funny you say this because I once went in a Ross with my wife and someone had taken a monster shit in one of the aisles. It was absolutely horrific. I think about it every time she wants to go to Ross now. I don’t think I’ve gone in one with her since.

There’s different strategies and tactics to protesting. It creates a different vibe that can come across with a more unified and singular message if people only show up carrying the American flag instead of a bunch of different signs. It also avoids certain tactics that can be used to discredit the protest.

I’ve had cops come around to check out what they could when I was living with roommates and we had all kinds of equipment that used lots of electricity. We actually got a letter from the power company telling us we were in the 99th percentile of residential power use and to consider how much money we could save if we lowered our electricity useage. I’m sure if the cops saw anything they could construe as evidence when they were snooping around they would then easily get a warrant and do a raid.

I think once you have been awake past a certain point your brain becomes sort of desensitized to sleepiness and it gets easier to keep staying awake. Or at least that is how my brain is, things get weird but I will feel like I can keep going when I really shouldn’t.

I used to live across the street from a relatively popular tourist attraction and would occasionally get tourists standing in front of my windows and commenting on things in my apartment. Once my girlfriend and I were eating breakfast in front of an open window and someone tried talking to us about how expensive something was in our apartment. Besides that the only regular rudeness was groups acting like they own the sidewalk. Usually its large families but I do remember one time what looked like a Russian oligarch trophy wife surrounded by an entourage of stereotypical body guards that had people swearing at them because they were not letting anyone else use the sidewalk as they headed for the tourist attraction.

I’m not sure, it was very diverse but the amount and type of diversity changes depending on where in the city you are and when it is. I went to a market where just about everyone was I believe from North African or Arab backgrounds, white folks were a minority. I also spent some time in a bar where we were some of the only white people. Most places though white folks were the majority. I’m sure there’s racism but the only bigotry I definitely noticed among Parisians was against the Roma.

Yes, white American who is unable to speak French. Which reminds me, Parisians are a lot less white than in the movies. At least the places I went and the people I met.

Raised “Christian” in the evangelical/born again/southern baptist milieu. Strip mall churches and unaccredited schools with unqualified teachers and Bob Jones text books. I do not understand how you have gone through life without any traumatic experiences, that seems incredibly unlikely. Also, you are perhaps the only person on earth with perfect mental health these days.
I was thinking you had maybe had a bad experience in nature when you were young because your comment reminded me of a few people I’ve known. At least one of them had a series of bad camping experiences as a child that really defined how they view nature for the rest of their life. I think they had a parent who was really into nature and tried to force it onto them but it didn’t go well.
