Worshiping any nation is dumb—especially both the US & China. If not captalism then communism cuts out all other political ideologies; either/oring is fallacious & too simplistic.

Availability is hard. Many are only able to be purchased in the West.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Every Terminal program should have a black background by default
51·6 months agoAnd make it #000 pure black if you do… I have written about why
I would 'free but folks need to learn some Nix basics before the jump in headlong into bad community recommendations like starting with flakes. It’s hard to just drop into Nix without some commitment.
KDL is the future. It reads nice & is compatible with both JSON & XML
Lol. Even this $100 phone can get a headphone jack but the massively-funded Android OEMs aside Sony can’t offer this feature.
I really wish that the Firefox phone had gained more support
KaiOS 4.x just dropped with Fx 128 I think. You will be on an underpowered flip phone, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing…
I got a Sailfish OS last year seeing the writing on the wall already with all the bootloader locking. It’s been bumpy to put it lightly, but at least it has Android apps to help get over the gaping holes of basic missing apps like a halfway decent XMPP client. …But at least native WhisperFish lets you get around the lack of Signal on most non-duopoly platforms.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•The devil said, “Take this glyph-laden grimoire and try to render it cross-platform.”
2·1 year agoI have been this last week. Very cool. I even built a keyboard for Sailfish OS.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What will it take to grow open source Lemmy, ActivityPub, ATProtocol, & other platforms/apps/websites?
3·1 year agoYou could make a better UX on ActivityPub without inventing a new, incompatible protocol that has a centralization problem. Email is decentralized just fine. They could have also made proposals to ActivityPub or extending it like most applications do. It is just venture capital bullshit cloning Tvitter which makes it more familiar rather than an objectively easier UX.

Linux@lemmy.ml•If you have to pick only one Desktop Environment and use it till your computer breaks, what would you choose?
2·1 year agoI would say the same & I don’t even use it—but I would trust it being around the longest & is better than GNOME IMO.
I use
aercthruhome-manageraccounts on NixOS

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Would you have a drink at lunch and then go back to work?
53·1 year agoAlcohol is bad for you health. Workplaces should be better so folks don’t feel the need to injest poison to tolerate it.
I find this pretty bad since everything seems to be compatible until it is too late & it is already adopted. I would like to see more uptake of the alternatives.
Jerboa vs. the website do different things since they render Markdown differently. Markdown itself is so spartan that it doesn’t have many things users want or need, so a bunch of incompatible forks get made & everyone just pretends it is all the same when in reality, it often lies on a single tool’s implementation.
Take AsciiDoc with its verse directive or reStructuredText with its line-block directive. Both get you poetry-style newlines on demand & are a part of the spec instead of left to the implementer.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•DAE feel like DuckDuckGo is now just as good as google for the vast majority of searches?
5·1 year agoNo. DDG still puts less priority in small blogs over Reddit posts. All bigger search engines put way too much stock & rank in corpo social media.
Being able to have a decentralized form to accept patches is key to keeping the D in DVCS (distributed version control system). Pijul you can omit the email & even name if you want to be anonymous, or your key servers could offer better forms of communication.
I totally disagree with letting Microsoft GitHub be a sink for email. Not only is it US-based, publicly-traded with shareholders to appease, & fully proprietary… but they are also a major data siphon with Copilot™ products trained on then sold back from code & conversation in what should The Commons which probably include these no replies. We are also talking about a massively centralizing platform saying omitting your email is fine since you can direct your contributors to use their closed, proprietary platform—something anyone with any sympathy for free software ethos or even basic privacy for contributors would never demand, endorse, or encourage the usage of MS GitHub in any form.

No disagreement, but there is implications & framing towards China’s model all over this thread.
