I needed my bank to issue one check acceptable in the US.

It was the most expensive free update I ever had: The update was free, but shipping and handling was $10, outside US&Canada another $20, and express delivery another $10. Plus about $35 in fees to the bank for issuing an American bank compatible check and swapping local currency into US$.

Fun fact: Despite paying for “express delivery” and sending the check and the order per air mail, it took six weeks. One Sunday, the doorbell rang, and a courier right from the next airport delivered a beefy box (software was media and printed manuals back then!). In the box was a copy of the order - it was stamped as “received” on Friday morning, so they really did express delivery. Why the air mail to the US took six weeks though is still a mystery.

Last time it was off was during the summer holidays.

Of course we are paying more. But we live a way better overall life. Freedom to own guns or to do rampant racism does not feed or educate people, nor does it keep them healthy.

University in my country for CS cost me boutish US$250 per six months, and this included a nearly state wide ticket for public transport and heavily subsidized good at the student cafeteria.

My home server runs on an old desktop PC, bought at a discounter. But as we have bought several identical ones, we have both parts to upgrade them (RAM!) as well as organ donors for everything else.

That’s the point. I don’t think RISC-V is coming even close to high-performance ARM chips, so building a laptop around RISC-V instead of ARM makes no sense to me.

What I have seen about RISC-V is not exactly promising performance-wise. At least not for a laptop or desktop PC.

I can see ARM-based laptops, or products like the RPi 500 (once it supports M.2 sticks and 8GB RAM, hopefully more one day), but RISC-V is not there yet.
