I think it’s more of an elitest thing. I’m a boat owner, technically yacht (30 years old). I don’t call it a yacht because it’s a fucking boat, I don’t call it a head, it’s a bathroom.
Another example is it used to be “I go to the gym”. Now it’s like “haha I do CROSSFIT”. It’s the damn gym. Apparently because there’s a couple used tractor tires in there it’s something special is comical.
Car camping is just camping with unnecessary consumerism.

I’m guessing you’re being sarcastic, but you do realise in places which are not quite so car-obssessed, people literally do this quite often?
It’s also very common to use the bus or train for the first 10 - 50 miles or whatever, then walk the last 1 - 10 miles.
I sometimes take bus when I’m backpacking. Eliminates the worry of smashed windows at the trailhead
I feel like there is an interesting money gradient in car camping/van dwelling space between people doing this because they have to and people doing this because they want to and can pay for shit like the awning.
I also feel like the snorkel is less a camping flex and more a way to gear flex.
It’s as consumerist as you want it to be lol. Like my car camping is just basically the tent and a power station. It’s nice to get away from the cities, go sight seeing, and save money on hotels.
I have roof tent. Its great because I sleep better in it than on inflated mattress. Also takes less time to pack up. But I put it on a normal car.
But yeah I don’t do overlanding because no 4x4 offroading.
