Electric vehicles have taken off in Ethiopia. Key to the shift: a world-first ban on importing fossil fuel-powered vehicles.


This headline is a bit misleading. 8% of cars are electric and the ban is on imports of ice vehicles.
It’s great don’t get me wrong, but I think the headline is borderline click bait.
It is a ban on importing new ICE cars. And because Ethiopia does not build cars, it is effectively a ban on new ICE cars. Anything else would be not viable right now. It is effective because new cars are, on average, driven more miles per car per year. And Ethiopia, as far as I know, is the first country to do so.
