Is Linux Mint well adapted for touch screens?

I think I would go for GNOME if I were to use Linux with a touch screen. Then again, I’m using it anyway, so I’m probably biased.

If you don’t have any luck dumpster diving it might be worth checking if any of your local supermarkets (or even bakeries) are using Too Good to Go. They decide how much to put in the package, but a generous place will give you a bunch of food for very little money.

Full beards are great. I can go a week without any maintenance and still look presentable. Any other style of facial hair is just too much effort.

I think zoomers are young enough not to have the generational memory of how creepy mustaches are, so suddenly they’re cool again. I’m afraid it’ll last until the zoomers are old enough to be the creepy ones.

Super Mario. It’s been milked for what it’s worth and more, but whenever there’s a new Mario game you just know it’s going to be good.

I’m currently experimenting with Seppo for my website, which is… not ready yet. So maybe not the greatest suggestion. But development is happening fast, and I like it for a couple of reasons.

1. It’s incredibly easy to install. Just upload a file, set permissions, and open it in the browser. I’m somewhat incompetent, so I appreciate that even though deploying WordPress is obviously not very difficult either.
2. Content is stored in basic XML files, making it easy to access with just basic PHP and an XSLT stylesheet. Basically it easy to incorporate posts into your site however you want it.
3. It federates with ActivityPub, so people can follow your blog directly and get the content directly into their feeds.
4. It’s lightweight - very little bullshit.

Basic functionality such as editing and deleting posts does not work yet, so it’s absolutely not ready for primetime. But it’s a project worth following, especially for those of us with an interest in the social web.

Edit: I guess this would be more if you wanted to create a basic website yourself, and add a tool for content management to it. I read the post a bit too quickly - if you’re not interested in writing some code there are much better options to go for out there. Seppo I think is nice for those who actively want to tinker a bit. :)

If you want to crazy with the keyboard, consider switching to Dvorak instead! It’s an investment of course, but you get used to it surprisingly quick and the typing experience is a lot better. As for the function button you can always just remap them to your preference, I don’t see the point in making a fuzz. Most distros are also made with a PC keyboard in mind, not that I know if that matters.

As for GNOME vs KDE, it’s up to personal preference. I enjoy my GNOME setup a lot, running just a couple extensions to get it just the way I like it. I enjoy that there are very few options and distractions around that I am not interested in. And I of course understand that other people prefer KDE. It’s great that there are two dominant DEs with such completely different design philosophies.

In the end, nothing is better than second hand!

Why do you think Ubuntu Touch is almost dead? The development community is pretty active. They recently finished the huge task of upgrading to 20.04, and are hard at work getting up to speed with 24.04, at which point they will have paid back a lot of technical debt.

Ubuntu Touch on a supported device is probably the most usable experience you can have with Linux phones as a daily driver at the moment, especially as Waydroid runs quite well on many devices to fill the gaps.

I think the Fairphone 4 is also worth checking out. It works great with Ubuntu Touch, SailfishOS seems to be doing well on the device, and there’s developments towards PostmarketOS. :)

It’s a friendly community, and Lomiri is a great DE that people have also gotten up and running on [other distros].

For the time being it runs better on Android devices than on “pure” linux phones such as the PinePhone, but I have great experiences with it. If you don’t depend on other IM services than Signal you could probably use it as a daily driver on several phones already.

Yeah, there’s ways around it for sure, so it’s not the end of the world.

I’m not super technical though, so as my hosting provider uses Google for HTTPS authentication I’ll just reluctantly stick with that for now. Of course I could have found a different provider, but I found it a somewhat difficult market to navigate. I’m enough of a rookie that part of me is just happy things seem to be working - when I set up the website a few months ago I kind of assumed HTTPS was some black magic stuff that I would never manage to implement.

And http still works in any browser I know of.

I kind of get your frustration though. I set up my personal website precisely to get away from big platforms; yet my HTTPS is validated by Google. It feels like a defeat still having them involved in the process.

That wouldn’t really solve anything though, as long as they’re still out and about in society. So if we follow this argument basically where we end up is prison for life.

If we are to release people we have to give them a real chance go get their life right. Releasing people from prison only to cripple them and make sure they can never live a normal life is not likely to solve any problems.

• Gillian Welch. One of the best in country music. Time (The Revelator) is my favourite album, and has a really cool song touching upon themes such as the sinking of the Titanic, the troubles of getting red clay off your dress, and how hard it is to make money as an artist these days.
• PJ Harvey. Listen to hear early stuff for punk, or her newer stuff for all kinds of experimentation. I dig Rid of Me for the former and Let England Shake for the latter.
• Patti Smith. Because somehow I don’t see Patti Smith mentioned in this thread yet.

I don’t really agree. Sure, there’s shitty content everywhere, and there’s a couple of instances filled to the brim with edgy tankies possessing not only an IQ worthy of fenceposts, but a comprehension of Marxist theory on par with that the highest ranked Gulag camp keeper.

There’s also, however, other people. And more often than not I find that wherever there’s an interesting discussion to be had, people are having it. If someone annoys you it’s not harder than blocking them or their instance, and you can keep having your high brow discussions in peace and quiet.

And Kant would, if I read him correctly, argue that giving money to a beggar is not a moral action - it’s a selfish action, and not morally bad or good as such. It doesn’t have to do with morality, it has to do with our need to feel better about ourselves. :)
