Politics range from socialism to anarchism. Any thread on any topic is a good place to discuss Linux. No one cares about how many upvotes people have. You may need to actively explore communities and join them if you want. It’s a bit like free software, if you think something is lacking, participate with more content and build up the community. Free software is great, what’s your favorite distro?

Iirc, the list is of operating systems that the FSF recommends. You could have a system running 100% free software, but the FSF won’t recommend it if the distro makes it easy to theoretically install proprietary code. It’s fine to run such a system, but the FSF won’t recommend it.

I respect how OpenBSD seems to work. Like “we do this for ourselves, but if you want to use our software, go ahead, we don’t mind (or care)”.

Could it be that desktop usage in general has gone down? That people use their phones and tablets for browsing and similar tasks. Then Linux would have a bigger share, but maybe not because there are more users.

Banks sometimes need a 2FA app, this is what some people need “banking apps” for. The bank website itself is trivial to just use, but you need to be able to log in. In sweden, much of society, from fetching a post package to booking an appointment with a doctor or getting a bus ticket, relies on this 2FA app. You can barely function in society without this app.

Many people find Debian to be a “boring” OS. After years of distrohopping some come to the conclusion that a boring OS is exactly what they want.

Aha. I was part of a project where each dev had their own long running branch for non-specific work and this was the norm, but it always felt clunky. And often resulted in merge issues.

Is it ok to continue on a branch if you also merge back main into it? Like, branch gets merged into main on remote, local main pull, local merge main into local branch, push branch?

If I may ask, where are you from? The city I live in is a nightmare for cars, the roads were made for horses and walking, narrow and winding cobblestone streets and the city tries its best to keep cars out of the center.

We have the voting system to weigh in on what should be more visible and less visible. I want to believe it can work. If I give up on the idea that a crowd can collectively self regulate content without giving all power to a small group, then there’s no point for me to be on lemmy. I can stand sometimes seeing things I don’t want to see if the system generally works.

Purely anecdotal, but the dominance/submission dynamic is something that many women seem to actually want. I have never steered things in that direction since it’s not my thing, but everyone I have been with has asked for some actions like that, being held down, light choking, some pain, etc. Remember how popular 50 shades was? A little bit yes, since the BankID is owned by private companies. There are those who are working on a free software version and some people think that the government should have an official authentication app free from private interests. But it’s been hard to make people aware and care about these issues. It’s like the xkcd worlds smallest open source violin. At the same time, many things that relate to proving that I am me has become very convenient in this society. For example I moved to a new apartment and they just sent a link to the contract and I signed it with the app and that was that, I did my taxes by just checking that the info they had was correct and signed it on my phone, etc.
