stable diffusion has been out for a couple of years now so the point about energy waste when it comes to image generation has never made any sense.

It has gotten so bad that anything that has the two magic letters associated with it is violently rejected by the mob no matter the context.

It is the exact kind of stupid logic that was used to frame computer games as the root cause for violent kids.

  • The weight isn’t all that bad. I’ve been running around with it all day on vacations and wasn’t bothered by it. The size imho is more important. I paid ~1400€ used. All the cameras with interchangeable lens systems are in similar price ranges unfortunately. The more compact ones are even more expensive. There is a very compact sony one with integrated zoom lens i forgot the name of that goes for more than 2k€ The ricoh gr iv is similarly priced and has a fixed zoom lens and no EVF and in sunny daylight no evf is a no go imho. The displays on cameras are usually much darker than smartphone displays so you really need an evf.

If you want to safe a bit of money you can go for the a6400. it has a couple of compromises but isn’t all that much worse purely for photography.

But yeah cameras are expensive. But they last you much longer than smartphones and the retail price is fairly stable. There is 10 year old ones that still go for a significant chunk of the original price on the used market

  • i bought a used sony a6700 with a sigma 18-50mm for that very reason. Not that pocketable but small enough and i actually shoot more because i usually keep it in my hand when i am travelling. An the creative styles + white balance bias means, i barely ever manually edit the raws and i can transfer them wirelessly to my phone and sync them automatically with my immich server.

I have anothet compact ttartisan 25mm f/2.0 as a fun/more compact lens for when i want it a little more pocketable.

Probably one of the best purchases i’ve ever made.

  • no it is not fundamentally unethical. Please stop perpetuating this stupid take. AI is not designed to do unethical things. The profit motive drives companies to doing unethical things with it. If it weren’t for AI, they’d use something else.

Please don’t lose sight of the root cause of the problems, which is profit above everything. Equally you could say that fossil fuel combustion engines are fundamentally unethical because they cause climate change and all sorts of health issues.

Most technologies are neither ethical nor unethical. It is how you use them and what for that might be ethical or unethical. Sure they can be more or less useful. We can argue about that. But technology itself is orthogonal to ethics. Unless it is nukes or anything that is explicitly designed to do harm and nothing else.

The comic just points out the irony of buying into the personal responsibility narrative while participating in the hyperconsumption which is the real driver of pollution.

Therefor it still works imho, because the car is a ridiculous toy for rich people and stands for over consumption and over production due to capitalism. And the whole carbon foodprint thing was a PR stunt by the fossil fuel industry to shift the narrative away from the systemic issues towards individual responsibility. Obviously the bottle cap is not about the carbon foodprint at all. It is to reduce plastic pollution. But imho that confusion makes the joke even stronger because most people gobble up those pseudo-band-aid solutions to real issues without questioning their effectiveness in the slightest.

there is valid reasons to use generative AI. Making stupid, low effort, but high quality memes is absolutely one. I also enjoy the YT channel that cranks out AI generated videos of movie trailers. My favorite is still harry potter but in berlin. “One does not simply walk into the berghain” is just way too funny

i seriously don’t understand the strong emotional reaction some people have against posts by “tankies”. Everything i have read here and in other .ml communities usually comes from an honest place as far as i can tell. Most if not all communists/marxists identify as such because they’ve identified issues with the prevailing system and try to find alternatives to improve the material conditions for everyone.

Even if every tankie is completely wrong about the history regarding e.g. the soviet union and what is happening in china right now, why the strong emotional reaction to it? Every single person reacting that way is not impacted by it in any way or form no matter what is true. So they could just as much react by saying “if what you are saying is true, that would be pretty cool, but i don’t see the evidence for it” or even “the good doesn’t outweigh the bad in my opinion”.

Instead, every single time it is “china propaganda!!!” or “ah so you like that stalin killed all those people and let even more starve to death”. No honest discussion can ever happen that way and i seriously don’t understand it. Can’t we just discuss what might be good for society and what might be bad and talk about the validity of different kinds of sources and evidence without a strong emotional attachment to anything either way?

  • that is who is usually referred to as tech bros imo. It’s the elon musks, the people that are in charge and seem to have a superficial understanding of the technology (more than what tou can say about most CEOs unfortunately) but are actually only interested in money. The people that actually innovate and work on the technologies are often smarter than that.

Unfortunately someone needs to pay the bills and those people are passionate enough about the technology that they end up working for the tech bros and ultimately contribute to the problems

  • Are you bored? Did you just build a strawman version of your own community to argue about something that is trivially easy to answer for everyone in this community? I am seriously confused. I have never ever heard anyone say that you could turn any distro into any other. That is just obviously not true. And every single question on your bullet point list is equally easy to answer.

When people say that it doesn’t matter which distro you use what they obviously mean is that the desktop environment has the way more immediate and tangible impact on the user experience. So as long as the newcomer choses one of the many distros that have an intuitive installer (so obviously not Arch), are reasonably up to date, have a broad software package repository, and come with one of the major environments pre installed, it really does not matter that much.

Honestly a bit of bait is good. I have enjoyed reading the discussions that emerged in some of those threads. I see this post for what it is: bait. You could make less provocative posts but even then some people just want to read it as tankie propaganda.

Maybe we should create a community called “tankie memes” for when you do want to go all out and trigger people
