Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•At what point should a Polycule have more than 1 tooth brush?
1·1 year agoTime for a weekend away at Hilbert’s Grand Hotel, methinks.
You’re being a bit hard on yourself. Words (and other things) change over time, misunderstanding things isn’t shameful, only failing to adapt to new information is.
Have a blessed Friday :)
I’m going to assume this question was asked in good faith. Speech is a synonym for expression. The written word is also not technically speech but is very much included in the term “Free Speech”.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are some tech opinions that divide people the most but are actually pointless either side?

Fair warning I haven’t read this specific article but an MIT prediction has societal collapse happening by 2040
The french used to use an explosive device called a “petard” (old french for a fart), that was used to breach doors. However these would sometimes blow back and kill the user rather than breach the door. This was the original intention for the Shakespearian phrase. One was Hoisted (old verb* not used anymore but essentially blown off their feet) by their own Petard (or door breaching bomb).
More information is here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoist_with_his_own_petard
*Unrelated to hoist as in to lift, despite similarities
Yes agree with this and categorise each into one set of broader goals, I suggest one is Programming, one could be Gaming etc. Then allocate time to each larger goal and order your sub “tickets” in there so you focus on one thing in a section at a time. For example, don’t learn Python and Rust at the same time, focus on one or the other (I’d probably suggest Python first as Rust has a very steep learning curve), but you can easily spend some time a week learning Python and some time learning Factorio, without the two things working against each other.
Edit: for Programming stuff the site Roadmap.sh (https://roadmap.sh/) is useful for giving you an opinionated task list. It’s not for everyone, but if you just want to know where to start you could go a lot further wrong than that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the dumbest thing you've done to fix a tech issue?
2·2 years agoIt might help in the future for trigger warnings as it’s used in those quite often, at least. Every cloud…

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How can I host a small api/database accessable from a phone app as cheap/easily as possible?English
4·2 years agoJust a quick note for hosting a DB on a pi (or anything that uses SD cards for the OS), SD cards fail with some regularity, so I strongly suggest getting an NVMe board with a stick of SSD memory to store the actual files, because it’s much more reliable long term for data integrity. SD cards support reading large amounts but writes wear them out more quickly.
You can find great cases that come with the boards (but not the SSD, however that’s very easy to find separately).
For RPi 4 I have an Argon (NVMe board sold as accessory): https://argon40.com/products/argon-one-v2-case-for-raspberry-pi-4
And fro RPi 5 I have a Pironman case (NVMe comes as part of the kit): https://www.sunfounder.com/products/pironman-5-nvme-m-2-ssd-pcie-mini-pc-case-for-raspberry-pi-5
I recommend both of those but your use case may vary.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Bilingual people, when you were/if you are in school, did/do you ever talk to someone who speaks your language in that language so that the teachers won’t understand?
3·2 years agoWhen I was at school (UK) there was a German girl and a Swiss girl talking in German and one of them said “Scheiser” really loudly, the teacher turnes and glared at them and slowly they realised why and had to apologise to the teacher, as they hadn’t really thought that while he couldn’t understand, he still knew the swear words!
Wasn’t a big deal was just funny and everyone laughed (incl teacher), needless to say they were a bit more cautious after that.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the smallest city in your country that everyone can still instantly recognise the name of? What is it famous for?
5·2 years agoI thought so too before moving here, but there’s two cities, and a lot of empty space (in the north in particular) with lots of towns and villages, it’s not like Monaco or the Vatican City in that regard.
That being said, it’s still all very close together, you can drive from the northern most point to the south in about 1.5-2 hours.
The funniest thing I’ve learned about the geography is that there is a North/South divide where people from either don’t trust people from the other.

It’s a reference to The Mythical Man Month and (I believe) one of the parables told inside:
