Just keep in mind that you can’t wipe the bad sectors that have been remapped. That’s unlikely to be an issue for a personal drive, but something to consider if it held particularly sensitive information.

I encrypt everything that leaves my house since it could be easily lost or stolen, but it is rather inconvenient.

If someone breaks into my house, I’ve got bigger problems than someone getting their hands on my media collection. I think it would be more likely for me to mess something up and loose access to my data than for someone to steal it.

You can get power strips that will sense the load on one outlet and shut all the others off if the load is below a certain amount. They are handy for shutting off those annoying standby LEDs automatically.

My laptop has been up for 123 days. It gets put in standby when it’s not in use. I should probably reboot into a new kernel soon.
My desktop gets shut down at night because it’s power hungry.
My server gets shut down about once a year for cleaning and hardware upgrades.

If you want to tinker with it, stay away from that DJI crap and build your own. Then you can get more than a flight or two without something burning up.

If you let the laptop sit for years, the battery will be dead and there is a small chance that the SSD may be corrupted. They are only rated to retain data for a year without power.

Debian will have updates, but apart from the browser, it will typically only be security and bug fix updates.

It’s better to just put the display to sleep when it’s not in use anyways. We only used screensavers because CRT monitors took so long to fully warm up.

Just replace the CEO with an AI. It would probably do the job just as poorly, but wouldn’t need any payment.

If the game doesn’t run on Linux, there’s a good chance it’s using a rootkit and should not be installed on windows either.

I’ve been using zoneminder with some POE IP cameras for a long time. It works pretty well, but the interface looks like it’s from the 90’s. I just wish it would do object detection so it wouldn’t send alerts because of shadows or a spider crawling across the lens.

My cameras have been out in the weather for over a decade and are starting to get a bit flaky. I will probably upgrade to some 4K analog cameras and a DVR that can do object detection. Modern IP cameras still don’t support gigabit and I don’t want any more 100M stuff on my network. I don’t trust WiFi for anything security related because it’s too easy to jam.

You don’t need 64 bit programs or CPUs to fix the 2038 problem. You just need to use a 64 bit time_t. It will work fine on 32 bit CPUs or even 8 bit microcontrollers.

I would rather have the network switch.

SATA SSDs are still more than fast enough to saturate a 2.5G ethernet connection. Some HDDs can even saturate 2.5G on large sequential reads and writes. The higher speed from M.2 NVMe drives isn’t very useful when they overheat and thermal throttle quickly. You need U.2 or EDSFF drives for sustained high speed transfers.

There’s not much room for any open programs on that panel. Why didn’t you use a dock for the launchers instead?

My server with 8 hard drives uses about 60 watts and goes up to around 80 under heavy load. The firewall, switch, access points and modem use another 50-60 watts.

I really need upgrade my server and firewall to something about 10 years newer, it would reduce my power consumption quite a bit and I would have a lot more runtime on UPS.

That will be more likely as more people start using SteamOS.
If SteamOS can get enough users, then not supporting it will start to hurt the game developers profits.

I get around 10 hours of web browsing or video playback on my T480 with integrated graphics and the extended battery. It would be a couple hours longer if it had fresh batteries.

The reader may need a kernel module loaded. I have an old laptop with a built in Realtek PCIe card reader that requires the rtsx_pci_sdmmc module to be manually loaded.

If it is a PCIe card reader, it should have shown up in lspci even without the module loaded though.

Have you checked the BIOS settings to make sure it hasn’t been disabled there?

If the card reader is built in, it may show up as /dev/mmcblk0.

The U6+ will nearly max out gigabit with a 160MHz channel. The U7 Pro can provide higher speeds, but keep in mind there is only room for a single 240MHz channel on 5GHz. You will need 2.5G ethernet to take advantage of the higher speeds.

Interference from any other WiFi networks within your channel will slow things down a lot though. That makes running with channels wider than 80MHz difficult if there are any other networks in range.
