Yeah, you’re a bit SOL for CAD and drawing. I mean, Krita is great, but if you use Adobe you’re fucked.

Yeah, Kubuntu has some issues. If you didn’t have any trouble with Manjaro, CachyOS is similar, but without the BS, super fast and gaming focused. I’m using it now, and I was fully expecting to break it but it just keeps trucking.

Also, you can run both of those games on Linux. Steam’s Proton tool is magic. ProtonDB users have Rocket League working on the Steam Deck. You probably just need the Heroic Games Launcher to get it from Epic. I don’t have any personal experience with Rocket League, but Civ IV definitely runs through Steam with Proton, and it’s not hard to mod games on there. (Not hard meaning: the same as Windows, just with slightly different file paths and maybe 2 extra steps done with a GUI)

Mmm yeah, Mint is like the only one of those designed for compatibility and ease of use first. Manjaro as your 2nd distro is an especially wild step. That was my 2nd distro as well, and it was miserable and I broke my machine lol. Then, come to find out, the company that makes it suxx with a capital XX.

You know, now that I think back on my early days, I actually did try Kubuntu for a little bit and I had a few hiccups there. Never failed to boot on me, but it did have times where it felt like it was trying. 😭

If you ever feel like giving it a go again, Pop!_OS is pretooled to have all the drivers you need. I didn’t have a single problem with Pop! my whole time using it. If that doesn’t suit your visual style, then PikaOS has a great KDE Plasma spin that feels just like Windows!

My point being: I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but also understand that there are options that are drag ‘n’ drop easy at this point.

Pop!_OS, PikaOS, CachyOS, and Bazzite are the top gaming distros right now.

I recommend Pop! if you have Nvidia cards. If you have AMD, any of them will work.

PikaOS or Bazzite with the KDE Plasma desktop are going to be closest to Windows 10 in terms of how you use them.

Pop! has a super different UI, almost Mac-like. But it’s based on Ubuntu, the most-used distro. Which means that if anything goes wrong you can search “[problem] Ubuntu” and get hundreds of solution pages.

CachyOS is based on Arch, which is the big, scawy Linux that all the nerds say they use. It’s easier to break than the other ones, and won’t officially offer some of the apps that something Debian/Ubuntu based might have. I would recommend it when you’re looking to get a bit more technical.

That said, I haven’t broken my install yet and CachyOS is like the fastest OS available right now. Serious FPS gains for a LOT of games compared to Windows, and even other Linux distros. I also have not had to sit and troubleshoot it over anything. I was shocked at how smooth it was for an Arch system.

So, there’s not really a bad choice in those 4. I’d recommend Pop! if you never want to have to tinker, Pika or Bazzite if you want to feel like you’re still using Windows, and Cachy when you feel comfortable taking some training wheels off (and that could be right now!).

For browsers, try LibreWolf. It’s a locked-down version of Firefox. Or just use Firefox. It ain’t perfect, but then again it ain’t Chrome.

Ehhh it could happen, but if you use something like Linux Mint or Pop!_OS, your experience is not going to be too different from Windows.

What kind of projects are you creating?

I will say, Linux really is not all the way there for people who use Adobe products. I get the hesitation. But, I haven’t had issues with games since like 2022 - and that was because I was trying to mod anyway.

That said, I have to inquire what distribution you’re using on your laptop? Not that they’re perfect, but something a little more preconfigured for your needs like Pop!_OS or CachyOS may be the ticket to a smoother experience.

I’m curious to know exactly what distribution you tried. Every type of Linux I have tried have never given me issues with programs, booting, or running games.

In fact, the only games that have flat out not worked for me are the ones that require a Windows system for their anticheat.

I don’t blame you for hating the system; I would too, given the circumstances. I’m just curious as to how your system got to such a state of unusability.

If you can emulate PSP games with ease, check out GTA Chinatown Wars. I just wanted to see how the game played one evening, and I ended up beating it in a couple days.

It has a drug dealing mechanic, and you have to crash cop cars to lose stars. Extremely unique and fun GTA.

I haven’t read into RetroDECK, is it an emulator frontend?

FWIW, the original PS2 versions of the GTA games that are also on PC are actually better because they removed content as licenses expired. Unless you have the downgraded PC versions - in which case, godspeed.

Even then, I usually stick with PS2 as PC doesn’t have support for the analog face buttons that the PS2 had. I don’t know if you can emulate that on Steam Deck, but if you play PS2 GTA San Andreas with an OEM controller, pressing the button harder actually does make you go faster. It’s magic, and I find it hard to play without now. 😅

I look forward to seeing how the Deck holds up with some of these titles! I’ll admit, I’ve been thinking about getting it to use as a portable PS2 myself.

I’ve heard great things about Bazzite, so I’m sure you’ll be fine there.

I just wanted something new, and Fedora was too similar to Ubuntu under the hood. I don’t know if I’m going to look back from Arch-based. Maybe when I break my install lol.

I found out about Pop!_OS when doing research for gaming on Linux. It’s maintained by a private company, and they invest a lot of time into keeping their drivers up-to-date. AFAIK it’s still one of the best choices if you have Nvidia cards, because they have a separate ISO just for Nvidia machines.

For a short time, I used Kubuntu because I love KDE Plasma. I had been wanting to use Plasma again, and I kinda wanted to try a non-Debian/Ubuntu-based distro. That’s when I stumbled upon CachyOS, and I don’t think I’m switching to another distro for a while.

CachyOS is Arch-based, with a super-easy install. They have their own version of the kernel, optimized for gaming. It really is fast, too. Not only does it beat Windows in most speed tests, but it beats pretty much every other distro as well. If you like Arch, I highly recommend CachyOS to keep some of the basic stuff optimized while you tinker with your system.

I had heard it was ready for gaming, and I wanted to see for myself. It wasn’t, at the time, but I used it for a few months before I switched back to Windows for a bit. Then, after another year on Windows, I gave Pop!_OS a chance. That sent me on a full spiral into distro hopping, and I’m on CachyOS now - not switching from Linux again.
