  • They’ve been doing this for years.

It’s why I’ve made a ‘save for later’ collection of things I either use on the regular like my favorite soap or face cleanser, or really low cost things ($1 or less) I could make use of like single use eyewash to put in a first aid kit, things like that.

Annoying that I have to play their stupid little game, but this lets me bump it past 35 without it being wasteful

Kind of a tangent, but this is probably a good opportunity to throw out there that Amazon is pretty often not the lowest cost place to buy something these days. For example, I needed a specific but simple hand tool and Amazon wanted $5-6 for it but the harbor freight on the way to work costs $2. Worth a second search

  • I’ve always tried to explain it just like that too, but it’s always like leading a horse to water, you can’t make it drink.

Also can’t make that horse understand that people who have opinions about niche subjects that have advanced degrees and study said subject for a living are worth listening to over reactionary angry idiots, but no. Folks would rather be addicted to rage than apply critical thinking.

I lost my dad to conservative media for this very reason. Started with that sack of shit Rush Limbaugh everyday on the radio and god knows what it is captivating his attention now. Can’t even have a normal conversation with him, he finds a way to always steer conversation to political rage.

How tf do we even come back from this?

  • This is what I did this year and last one too.

I started tracking my spending to see where my money was going which was very insightful. Patterns emerged I never could have seen if it wasn’t all laid out in one spreadsheet.

For instance, I learned based on a little experimentation that driving 65 instead of 75 on the highway saved me like $50/month. Yeah, I’m that guy and my commute takes another couple minutes but I still do this today. I’ve reframed it in my head as a $50/mo subscription that doesn’t give me much value for the money and only costs an extra few minutes a day. Worth it in this inflation era.

Also realized I was spending money in all these categories that I could be getting some high cash back credit cards for. When you can see your spending averages over time, it’s easy to be confident about getting a strategic 5% card for gas or online shopping that can claw back a decent chunk of the money you already know you’re gonna spend.

It’s definitely useful to track your spending, in more ways than one
