Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is your opinion on Libertarianism?English
13·3 months agoI don’t think libertarianism works, it relies naively on how the free market is omnipotent, how freedom is everything and how having a small government is somehow good. There are no countries that are entirely libertarian, that also tells a lot about the ideology’s applicability in practice. A brilliant book about why libertarianism doesn’t work is a book “A Libertarian Walks into a Bear”. In the book, a group of libertarians decides to take over the small town of Grafton in New Hampshire en masse as part of their “Free Town Project”. Of course this group cares neither about the town’s original inhabitants nor their rights. What’s the result? They hollow out pretty much everything from the library, to the school, the fire department and the police. No regard is given to any laws on hunting or food disposal, and that lures in bears, who turn so aggressive that they invade people’s homes. In addition to bears, sex offenders and all kinds of criminals are also lured into Grafton. It’s pretty entertaining book, I recommend it.
Another reason why I dislike libertarianism is that it can function as a gateway to fascism. This is a known phenomenon. Several key figures in the alt-right for example used to be libertarians. I stumbled into a clip from some American Libertarian Party convention where Richard Spencer was with Ron Paul. I had to rub my eyes a bit.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is it so hard to get Nvidia GPUs working with Linux?English
5·5 months agoGot Pop OS with Nvidia’s driver packages and it worked like a charm. And of course updating can be done through the package manager. No problems whatsoever, at least for me.
All I’m getting is an error screen that usually appears when a Lemmy instance has technical problems. So it blew its load!
I have never seen his face so red!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What would you do if you could transform into an invisible tiger?English
10·6 months agoI would travel a looong way on foot to Helsinki and the parliament house. Then I would attack and devour Petteri Orpo (our prime minister) and Riikka Purra (our minister of finance).
The plan? Enshittification.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What episode/season/movie do you consider as the ending in an otherwise long running franchise, and Why?English
21·9 months agoToy Story 3.
EDIT: And to elaborate, the movie showed a conclusion to a longer narrative thread of Andy growing up and his toys needing a new home. There was a satisfying ending.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I installed Linux (so should you) video by PewDiePieEnglish
152·10 months agoHe was inconsiderate when he made edgy jokes, tried to test if those two Fiver guys really would put up a sign saying “gas the Jews” and once said the N-word in a livestream – controversy ensued for obvious reasons and he since apologized for his actions. I haven’t been really following him in the last few years but after those controversies he left any Nazi jokes out, I think he learned his lessons. He has since settled down with a family and it has been pleasant following his life, especially now that he has gotten into Linux.
But don’t tell anything like that to the average Internet leftist! Even if PewDiePie apologized and left edgy jokes out, changed and moved on, in their eyes he is eternally a Nazi or Nazi-enabler who can never redeem himself! No matter how many years have passed, no matter how many apologies, any time PewDiePie gets mentioned in a post or is the main topic, this happens.

There are no recommendation algorithms for content, you are one! Search for communities based on your interests and subscribe to them. The Communities view of your home instance and Lemmy Explorer are good for that. Because Lemmy is decentralized, all discussion isn’t centered around one site like on Reddit, which may at first give an impression of emptiness.
I also wrote an extensive guide about Lemmy few weeks ago.
Welcome!

Considering how the person replacing Spencer has been known from leading Microsoft’s AI division and isn’t much of a gamer, this doesn’t make Xbox’s future rosy. Dwindling sales, large layoffs and RAM prices skyrocketing… I highly doubt they can build a competitive console.
