My neighbor had so many weird yet charming movies we didn’t have in our house. There was this one where I think an English man took care of an otter for some reason? Growing up there was an older couple on my street who would dress as Mr and Mrs. Clause for Halloween. Santa would open the door and offer you a big spoonful of mashed potatoes! After sufficient protest Mrs. Clause would bring out the candy.

Memes go through varying stages of popularity. Some burn fast and die off. Some go through a typical cycle. Some are simply useful or relevant and never die off. The point of the sub was to scout new meme formats and guess what kind of lifespan they’d have.

Empathy doesn’t have to mean letting them do whatever they want. It’s the only path to reforming them. I’ve worked with a young kid with no dad in the process of going down this pipeline. You have to challenge them on what they think they’ve learned about being a man, but if you don’t try to understand how they feel they will just shut you out. Ultimately you can’t make someone believe something. So you either give up and label them a lost cause, or you actually try to reach them and convince them person to person.
