Oh it’s not just tech companies, it’s tech companies getting ahead of the government who is going to demand the same thing. Say something that the government doesn’t agree with, boom, you already have the information readily available.
We could fight against it and refuse to use these services, but that would change the things we are all addicted to.
In the car or on the radio, you probably won’t hear the difference. Heavy compression and reverb are pretty much standard in modern music production. For a lot of people, music is just background noise, so it won’t matter to the large majority.

It’s to stop automated scrapping. Old reddit has less/little/no protections from that. New reddit has a lot more in place. So when you log in (which now you can only make an account with new reddit), it tracks a lot more information so it’s more difficult to get around bans. Basically stops the majority of automated scraping, which reddit doesn’t want.
If you are getting banned from new accounts on reddit, you probably were saying or doing some pretty swarmy things.
Much like the internet in general. Anything that becomes popular in general goes the same path, even without private equity. That just accelerates it.
Isn’t that no different than the millions of open source projects that have few authors, little interest and are abandoned for the next shiny thing? At least in my mind with the current state of LLMs, if there is an open source project that you want to update for yourself, you should be able to do that pretty easily.
Exactly. Oh I have this small problem, or solution I want to solve. Great I can put something together quickly and move on with life. I am not selling it, and it’s not even needed for ‘open source’ because its often incredibly niche problems that I am trying to solve for, that I wouldn’t be able to do elsewise.
For me, it’s been super helpful to write personalized things quickly that I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise. Are these things I plan on maintaining for decades? Hell no. But there is no current solution, this isn’t a commercial product, and I always have the code in case I want to make adjustments in the future.
I mean, it’s not fiction if we all want things to change. I don’t think I will stop tipping those who can’t afford to not be tipped, but you do you. I’d say the better solution for someone like yourself is to stop going to those places to begin with if you are that against ‘tipping’.
Same in every industry. Food industry is especially bad. Hell, I grew up on a farm in the US and we were free labor for our parents, but we wouldn’t have survived elsewise.
Correct, and that’s the rub. Tipped workers don’t want to change the system, because by and large they are far better off with tips than simply a minimum wage (or even prevailing minimum wage for an area). So realistically the only way to end it is to get rid of tipped wages in general, raise the minimum wage, and for people to stop going to places that ask for tips to pay for their workers.
Tipped workers represent 5 million+ workers in the US. While yes, ending tipping is important, probably better ways like raising minimum wages and getting rid of ‘tipped wages’ would work to end tipping rather than just telling 5 million people they need to find different work.
But if you talk to the majority of tipped workers, they don’t want to change the system, which is likely a far larger hurdle compared to diner preferences.
I was that dumb kid who got my first gmail invite from a friend and never thought to use my first name/last name because it was during the time that we all were supposed to be ‘anonymous’ as everyone on the internet was a murderer.
Except the government wanting this information didn’t exist. That’s the future, you ID will be tracked (it already is) and the government will know exactly what you say, where you go, and what you do. Throw it at an ‘AI’ for ‘normalcy’ and you have Minority Report in a much sadder way.
