M.2 seems easier for normies to mess up and SD cards have traditionally been significantly cheaper… plus a microSD card is smaller than M.2 by an order of magnitude.

I’m not so sure. Companies were definitely buying many up, but they typically stick to business purchasing channels like CDW/Dell/HP etc.

Consumer boxed cards sold by retailers might have went to some small businesses/startups and independent developers but largely they were picked up by scalpers or gamers.

I work in IT and have never went to a store to buy a video card unless it was an emergency need to get a system functional again. It’s vastly preferred to buy things through a VAR where warranties and support are much more robust than consumer channels.

Those genres aren’t really known for having brutal performance requirements. You have to play the bleeding edge stuff that adds prototype graphics postprocessing in their ultra or optional settings.

When you compare non RT performance the frame delta is tiny. When you compare RT it’s a lot bigger. I think most of the RT implementations are very flawed today and that it’s largely snake oil so far, but some people are obsessed.

I will say you can probably undervolt / underclock / power throttle that 4090 and get great frames per watt.

The 4090 basically never went for MSRP until Q4 2024… and now it’s OOS everywhere.

nobody scalped the 4080 because it was shit price/perf. 75% of the price of a 4090 too… so why not just pay the extra 25% and get the best?

the 4070ti (aka base 4080) was too pricey to scalp given that once you start cranking up the price then why not pay the scalper fee for a 4090.

Getting everyone to be involved and knowledgeable about absolutely everything and to fight to make things right is beyond the capabilities of current humans. The more I know the more I understand I don’t know a lot about so many things beyond what i’ve experienced. Ignorance drives so many reactions (including the personal attacks from my comments here.)

I have met many individuals in this world who get very, very angry that someone else is doing x, y, or z - even if it has zero impact on them. Some of the reactions to my comments here about a very logical challenge that could have solutions with technology are attacked with illogical non-arguments and are a perfect example of how impossible it is to get humans to think critically about things when they have their own biases.

Even under communism the 1% had 4% of assets, that’s not 1% of assets like true communism should be. That in and of itself proves corruption to me. The fact that the USSR fell and a handful of 1%ers got the majority of industries for pennies on the dollar is egregious corruption. None of this is a criticism of communism. This is criticizing the actions of individuals who decided to be corrupt.

It’s just human nature. Some people call it “enlightened self interest” others call it nepotism, some call it survival of the fittest. Some call it gaming the system. In all cases it’s the same problem. Sometimes things can go well for a while but on a scale of even just a hundred years when an organization has more than a couple hundred people it simply goes sideways.

Based on your comment history and how negative you are about absolutely everything… have you looked in the mirror lately?

Also keep in mind that I have simply made a hypothesis that humans are incapable of not being corrupt in organizations at scale. How in the fuck is that any one political leaning? The system itself is irrelevant. Even in communes where everyone “shares equally” there’s usually someone in leadership getting special exemptions and special treatment.

In very small organization sizes it’s possible but as people come and go eventually someone will get control to make decisions that put their interests or their connections interests ahead of the masses.

I think the flaw is human nature. All governments and organizations are corrupt. All implementations are always twisted to suit the greed of individuals.

It’s entirely possible to create policy and enforcement mechanisms that would mitigate or eliminate excessive greed but nobody with anything votes for it because they’ll lose out on their own personal greed by their measure. They want that chance to fleece the masses even if they aren’t in the club that’s already doing it.

Ouch. That’s 68k of house repairs in 3 years, or 1888/month for 3 years. For that i’m guessing you could come close to renting a 2BR… but then you’d lose the ubermortgage rate of 2021. 500k @ 7.5% here means i’m on the hook for 5kish per month before food/car/gas/internet/clothes expenses. (includes hoa/taxes/utilities/pmi and other escrow expenses.)

I throw away about 3300 on interest only per month because my wife forced us to buy and money is tighter than ever, but I still have an emergency fund.

I will say i’ve never put anything on credit unless cash is in the bank already. 20-30%+ interest is something you just can’t climb out from under easily. That being said I have no idea how i’m going to afford a ~15-20k replacement hvac system once my ~20 year old one dies, could be tomorrow, could be in 1-3 years - who is to say? Definitely on the hook for a water heater next year. Dishwasher is ready to go but i’d handwash.

Just curious. Everyone’s situation is different. Most of us who came from nothing had to make a lot of hard choices to get to a point where money was enough that a few hundred dollar purchase had no material impact on our lives.

It’s one of my biggest fears, but I guess there’s always piracy especially for old games.
