I watched it expecting the same campy tropes from other fantasy/sci-fi movies of the era and what I got was a movie deeper than it lets on. That score too, amazing.
Gay men are men too?
Used to see the odd “genetics” fat person and they’d just be built a bit bigger. Now I’m seeing fucking waddling planetoids and that’s not genetics man. Part of that blame belongs to individuals but part of it belongs to the food lobbyists and their quest to add sugar and corn syrup to everything.
Incentivise people to grow their own vegetables (or source them locally from those who already are) and disincentivise the purchase of processed and sweetened food. Have our agencies promote healthy recipes using weight rather than volume measurements and show people how to use scales to properly weigh ingredients and help make it as easy as possible to count calories.
Excel is probably the one sore spot for LibreOffice, but also Google’s suite and really everyone else. Excel is tough to beat, especially when you consider the additional power of things like Power Query and Excel on web having JavaScript functions.
That said: I truly despise pivot tables and I no longer use them. I use lookups, countif, or other functions to display what I need, otherwise I use Power Query.
lol but seriously this is the first time I’m not buying a Nintendo console on launch in a long time. Their prices here in Canada were already absurd but this gen is just unreal.
I had a kid and was working at the office 5 days a week during COVID so my experience wasn’t nearly as peaceful lol. But I could see how much some people thrived from it and I hate so much that our societies have taken that back from them.
Here in Canada we had a similar system and I had friends on CERB for some time. Many of them didn’t know what to do with themselves. The ones who took it well were already accustomed to finding their own fun in the world, and did everything from DIY renovations to prototyping products they want to sell.
I wouldn’t know personally, I was working the whole time. Longest I’ve been off for was 3 months and I was more concerned with survival than keeping busy. But I’d like to think I have a lot of projects to work on. I’d love to move out of the suburbs into the country proper and have a workshop. Making custom furniture and electronics is so fun but I barely have time for it.
No kidding. When your whole identity is how hard you work, what do you have left in life?
A decent amount of people really do just park their ass on the couch and cease existing. I’ve watched more than a few people retire and die shortly after from having nothing to live for.
AtkinsRéalis (known as SNC-Lavalin at the time) is a Canadian construction company that was at the centre of a huge scandal in Canada. They were caught bribing the son of Libian dictator Gaddafi to get a contract to build a prison, allegedly for political prisoners.
While the Justice Minister was having this company prosecuted, the Prime Minister (Justin Trudeau) demanded that she give AtkinsRéalis a slap on the wrist and a deferred prosecution agreement. When she refused, she was driven from her position.
Canada’s government has a history of propping up bad actors like this, and goes out of their way to support several oligopolies that run significant chunks of the Canadian market. Bell/Rogers/Telus own most of Canada’s mobile and internet offerings, Loblaws/Sobeys/Metro own most of Canada’s grocery stores, much of Canada’s produce and meat are controlled by cartels, etc… The maple syrup cartel is very powerful and wealthy and yes you’re reading that right, there is a maple syrup cartel and even a maple syrup black market.
One special mention goes out to the Canadian Real Estate industry, which is full of actual crooks all over the place and just disgusting. Did you know in Canada it is legal for a real estate agent to represent both sides of a purchase? Agents also will refuse to work with any of the bargain agencies that charge less than the standard 2.5% commission, basically locking them out of the industry. This crap is part of why housing prices have bubbled so hard, and together with price fixing by landlords they have managed to keep Canadian housing prices at levels so stupid homelessness has increased several times over.
Canadian people are often too fixated on not being seen to be a problem, what some call “politeness”, to the point they won’t even stand up for themselves. That unwillingness to protest or try to change things has allowed this to happen for a very long time. Because of this awful “politeness” many Canadians are even cheering on new laws limiting union action.
tl;dr Canada is a banana republic and Canadians are cucked
You could say this about literally anything though? All of the best rushes in life are just your brain drugging itself.
Seeing some of those idiots even in the comments on fucking Lemmy of all places is crazy.
I’m pretty over the whole “4chan dystopian joke becomes real life” thing. Corpo dickheads, you can stop now.
No sadly, in Canada actually. You really wouldn’t like how low IT pay is here.
It took me 3 years and over 700 applications to get two interviews and one underpaid job, which I took because it beat working for minimum wage and getting no experience. I worked that for 3 years and then they ran out of work for me. I was not able to leverage that experience into a new programming job despite my efforts and have since moved onto administration.
Yeah now I understand why so many admins hate “developers”: they’re actually real fucking ignorant about so many things, especially licensing. I’ve had to do battle with Oracle twice because our people don’t understand the difference between personal use and commercial use.
Google searches have become increasingly worthless over time. I find it depressingly difficult to find things now.
Considering grabbing a sub on one of the paid search engines like Kagi: the search actually works.
100% this would be my reasoning. I love Python for prototyping and personal stuff, but on an enterprise team? There is a reason Java has survived this long.
I really don’t get the use of AI to replace creative roles. At worst I’ve used it as a sort of “lorem ipsum” generator but for various placeholders. I think AI’s true value is in understanding the sometimes overwhelming amount of documents, records, datasets and databases that organizations can amass. Being able to have an AI help sift through the garbage is real helpful actually.
I’ve seen governments using it to do things like handle access-to-information type requests or help patent examiners find relevant patents: those uses make a lot of sense.
Selection bias. The nature of Reddit and its past as a liberal free speech zone lends (lended?) itself to particular traits. Reddit’s average user is some combination of the following:
Altogether this does actually mean IQ probably trends a bit higher on average. That doesn’t mean shit for the quality of your arguments if you don’t critically examine your beliefs though, and anyone spouting American media talking points is not examining anything.
