  • Why does this read as passively blaming Australians for modern day California wildfires?? Also fyi (it’s a paragraph or two so I’ll put it in a spoiler) it was and still is a California problem.

    Tap for spoiler

The eucalyptus goes to California: Following its spread throughout Europe, northern Africa, India, and South America, settlers in California became increasingly interested in the eucalyptus. Not only was eucalyptus a fascinating novelty, but the California Gold Rush of the late 1840s and early 1850s created high demand for wood for constructing buildings and for fuel. Deforestation had become a serious concern, so much so that the California Tree Culture Act of 1868 was created to encourage people to plant more trees, particularly along roads. Many entrepreneurs rushed to capitalize on the situation.

Ellwood Cooper’s role in spreading eucalyptus: Ellwood Cooper, educator, entrepreneur, and one of the key individuals who helped the eucalyptus take off in California, is a local legend here in Santa Barbara

  • Given a non insignificant amount of women migrated to Bluesky because of thinly veiled threats of SA from xitter; meeting strange blokes online probably isn’t high on the “must do” list. Hell even without the xitter shitfight that probably holds.

Even if a guy is just being platonic or speaking in a similar manner to a woman

This probably comes from a life with no shortage of blokes trying to get their foot in the door under the guise of “friendship”.

I think that’s a pretty closed off view of self help. Especially since earlier generations, particularly men, were sold the whole “men don’t cry” and “put up or shut up”. Essentially gaslit entire generations believing that forcing down emotions and emotional introspection out of their lives was the right thing to do. So it filled a market gap. Especially ones written by professionals, specifically in mental health or philosophy.

I’ve also seen (and personally received) testimonials on their effects. Shit people have literally read their way out of a smoking addiction (Alan Carr for my dart munching friends). That’s not to say there isn’t a lot of trash out there cashing in. Just the “everyone knows they don’t work” line irked me into replying.
