It’s emotional times so I understand that rationality ends up taking a back seat in the mind. I hope you’re right!
The moderate right provide a platform for the far right but I don’t think that makes them default Nazi’s.
Besides that, I’m not suggesting that you can always deprogram a Nazi, but you can absolutely target the moderate right swing voters who may not take kindly to being called a Nazi.
Honestly, your point of view is no better than the “all Muslims are terrorists” mantra and people like you will sleep walk us in to another four years of Republican rule.
Great comment. Trump won and the amount of people here throwing the Nazi word around still don’t realise how self defeating they are.
You can’t tell someone their an idiot or evil and then expect them to try seeing things your way, you’re much more likely to end up entrenching their beliefs. The goal should be to win them over, that won’t be accomplished by telling them how wrong and stupid they are.
Engage, don’t alienate, no matter how hard that feels at times.
I’d be getting bored if it was an echo chamber of any flavour.
As I’ve said in other comments, I’m here to learn and part of that means exposing myself to people that do not think alike to me. I’m not hear to circle jerk about how right we are, maybe that was fun the first few thousand times, it’s just boring now.
Ideally I’d like to get involved with a broad spectrum of people that somewhat represent the society that we live in.
Maybe I should just get offline and go to the pub.
It’s extremely big headed to think that only the people who agree with you are arguing honestly and have not based their arguments on any incorrect information.
I’m here to learn and grow, not to circle jerk with my friends about how right we are.
In the UK there is some similarity between liberal and left wing ideas, despite them being distinct political groups. Liberalism was originally seen as very left wing, a lot of people are now arguing that there is more in common with right wing politics, small state and such.
I’d say my experience here has been much more left wing than liberal though, just my opinion.
This is kind of the derision that I’m talking about. (I am assuming that you are talking about the right wing). Whilst there is some truth to it, you disagreeing with them or their arguments doesn’t mean that it isn’t interesting, or worthy of discussion or debate.
I do agree that hate speech should be banned and that isn’t what I’m interested in.
I’m not interested in the MAGA point of view per se, I’m interested in a diverse spectrum of ideas and opinions that reflect a real cross section of society, where undoubtedly some of them will be MAGA people. Whereas there is a very strong left leaning bias here.
Thanks for this. Will definitely check out those instances.
The redness in your cheeks when cold is due to increased blood flow trying to keep your skin warm, I take it that they return to normal when you warm up? I don’t think a specific moisturizer can really help with this.
You could try a balaclava if your red cheeks are really bothering you.
I quite literally said “not Nazi”, but I guess that in pigeon chess, you make up the rules of engagement.
It usually doesn’t take long to work out if a discussion is going to be interesting/worth while or not, although some people can be deceiving!
You can say I’m acting in bad faith, that’s your opinion that you are entitled to, I’m telling you I’m not.
The reality of the situation is that you simply disagree with my opinion but you’ve chosen to attack me rather than the substance of what I’m saying. It’s called an ad hominem.
Godwin’s law.
Congratulations on having the debating skills and etiquette of a child.
You’ve applied the label of fascist and Nazi yourself, nowhere in OPs post does he define his brother as a fascist or Nazi. Left Vs Right political differences doesn’t mean you automatically get to apply labels like commie or Nazi, a lot of people on Lemmy need to grow up.
OP bought up the Musk debate with his brother knowing that his brother is a right winger, then OP got upset when his brother acted just as you’d expect. He poked a dog with a stick and then got upset when it barked.
Honestly, and I already know I’m massively against the consensus here, but you should be the bigger man.
Tell your brother that you disagree with him but that he’s family, you’ll always love him and that you’re honoured to be a guest at his wedding.
If you want to draw a line and say “let’s not talk about politics though” or something like that, then absolutely do.
Don’t have all your family and his friends talk about how you’re refusing to attend because you had a fall out over politics, you’re not going to appear principled, you’re going to appear petty. You’ve made your point to your brother, now move on.
You do you, I’m not here to tell anyone what their Lemmy experience should be, I’m just saying I personally believe that it’s unhealthy to surround yourself only with people that agree with you, we all have to go back to the real world at some point.
There was a post yesterday where a guy was not going to his brother’s wedding because they’d had a fall out over the whole Musk thing. I think that’s terrible.
I agree that there is a huge difference between blocking hate (who the site should be blocking anyway due to breaching the community guidelines) and blocking someone you simply disagree with or are offended by.
When it comes to being offended it’s different, we can all agree that hate shouldn’t be tolerated, but offence is in the eye of the beholder.
I could block any users that I find to be offensive and live in a lovely online community where everyone agrees with me but I personally don’t want a community that doesn’t reflect the real world and I find it mentally unhealthy to pretend that offensive people and/or people with different points of view don’t exist.
I think there’s a difference between blocking people that use hate speech and blocking those who you simply disagree with but I don’t know why I keep bothering to try explaining myself.
We have to be the change we want to see
