Why would Kevin be the one contacting his mother? He thought he magically wished them away because he thought they hated him and treated him like scum. He never tries to contact them because he thinks they’d all just disappeared.

To be fair, he did go around the house calling “Mom, Dad?” If he had a phone before assuming he had wished them away he would probably try texting.
They also didn’t realize he was missing until after the plane took off
Even the airline check in person doesn’t bother to check/count the tickets.
Before 9-11 it was pretty easy to get on a plane I guess.
