Doesn’t the EU require countries to be physically located somewhere around Europe?

  Unfortunately yes. There are some exceptions, like French Guyana in South America being in the European Union, but that’s because it’s under the republic of France.

      Also, Cyprus is not technically in Europe, but it’s still in the EU.
