Tinder, a dating app, has recently updated its Terms of Service. Among minor bureaucratic modifications, one major change aims to battle impersonations. From now on, Tinder will ban web developers who claim to be 'engineers'. While backend- and other types of software developers seem to be unaffected, many believe the ToS will be amended soon to include those as well.

I know this is a joke but it can cause real problems. In Canada Engineer is a protected term, so if your customs agent is feeling like being a dick and you put “Software Engineer” instead of your official title (Mine is “Software Engineering Developer”) and you aren’t a licensed engineer you can get your visa denied and get royally fucked.

[PDF] Here’s the Engineers Canada Stance on it.

Listen, putting ‘Web Developer’ isn’t any worse than putting ‘Software Engineer’ in your tinder bio. Either way, you’ve fucked up.

The struggle is real. When I look for engineering jobs, more than half the results are software and I have yet to find a great way to filter them out.
