Many Lemmy users’ (understandable) hatred of AI seems to have stunted their abilities to keep up with AI advancements. Some of them even sound like they’re at least a year behind.
This is probably fine for most of them (sometimes I envy that, tbh), but some of them might be setting themselves up to be blindsided.
BTW, for people who absolutely hate the idea of learning AI, but might have to: I get it. I did too. Maybe I can offer a weird perspective after being forced to cross over to the “dark side”…
Weird perspective from the other side
(This might not apply to most people, so I tucked it away here to take less space.)
Do you find it really satisfying to “dial in” something? Anything. Maybe dialing in your home espresso shots, calibrating a 3D printer you built or modded, setting up a guitar to get the action and intonation right, getting an old motorcycle’s carburetors in sync, iteratively tweaking a recipe to perfection – whatever might scratch that itch for you.
If you’re way into that kind of thing (and maybe pretty tech-oriented), you might actually enjoy building AI agent “skills” (basically instruction files for specific tasks). On the first run of a skill, it might get some things wrong. But as you run it through each round of evaluations and improvements, it gets better and better.
LLMs’ results are probabilistic, not deterministic. So to build something on AI that actually works well, it needs to be “dialed in”. It scratches that kind of itch, for me.
(BTW, if that ever starts to feel too easy: Try doing it with a small model running on your consumer-grade hardware 😈. That’s hard mode)
to be fair, even hacker news users still sometimes say AI generated text can be spotted by emdashes even though that hasn’t been true for a long time, and those folks trend far qualified to comment than most public social media. same with generating hands, but i really only see that one on places like reddit. it’s not contained to lemmy, is my point.

But yeah you’re right. The “luddites” (not meant in the derogatory way) exist among many demographics. I’ve actually noticed an interesting dichotomy with many very skilled engineers who I greatly respect: Some have embraced AI and leveraged it to build some VERY cool things, while others still think AI is incapable of anything because they haven’t figured out how to get decent results with it yet. I don’t really see many in between those extremes.
One of them even handed a somewhat complex task to Claude Haiku (the model that generates the title of the conversation based on the first prompt), then determined that AI is just trash at everything 🤦🏻♂️
I think most of them are 15 year old kids whos experience with AI is what they see on TikTock
Bad AI videos, bad AI voices, bad AI art and music; that eventually these types of videos will stop getting views and the whole AI think will die
What they don’t know or understand is that this is the side effect of AI, not the driving force or even it’s primary use
In reality AI has infiltrated most businesses and is very quickly, if not already, an integral part of daily business routines

Man, their minds might be blown if they were to see Hermes’ Kanban feature in action. It’s basically AI running its own Kanban board with a team of agents. You throw a task into the “Triage” lane and a “decomposer” agent breaks it down into smaller Kanban tasks (including research/exploration if your triage prompt is vague), which automatically get picked up by whichever model the decomposer chose as the best fit for each task.
That’s why I think they’re all 15. They literally have zero idea of what AI is actually doing in the world and when I tried to explain it to them they told me I was lying
I have a kid so I’ve seen the Shorts on YouTube and a lot of them are “AI Slop”. It’s bad… like, real bad. If this is all I knew of AI, I’d think anyone who sees it as a useful tool is an idiot too
The biggest offenders are the videos that start with a wild concept. Like, “this woman dyed her hair using 13 gallons of pink hair dye! You’ll never believe how it turned out!”
But then the video is interrupted by AI Jesus or AI cats or something and the cats or Jesus beg you to like the video but also also if you love your mom you should subscribe and also if you love Jesus and your Mom (or you don’t want this cat to starve to death in the street and you love your mom), leave a comment telling Jesus or the Cat that you love them so they’ll know you care
And then it finally goes back to the woman who dyed or hair or whatever, but it’s barely a second long, and it’s just like, “her hair was pink” and the video ends.
So 99% of the video is badly animated AI Jesus with a bad AI voice begging you to like the video or else you’ll go to hell and the remaining 1% is, “this woman dyed her hair with 13 gallons of pink hair dye. You’ll never believe how it turned out! Her hair was pink”.
The ones I really hate though is when somebody takes an existing short (maybe of somebody cleaning a dirty rug) and they have AI write a song about it and they play the AI song on top of a video someone else made
The songs are always awful and they always end the same way, “but they were sad because they didn’t get any likes”
It’s bad… and it use to not be this way. Shorts use to be quick game tips or quick montage footage of what to expect on the full channel. But after AI blew up it’s almost all this AI slop with shitty AI Jesus or whatever.
And so if I were a tween who spent my lunch break watching TikTock and this is what I saw, this is what I knew of AI, of course I’d hate it. How could anyone defend that trash? That’s what we’re sucking up all the water for? But they also think it’s a trend. That eventually these videos will stop getting likes and when that happens people will stop making them and AI will go away
That sounds like a nightmare. I’m so glad that kind of garbage doesn’t show up in my YouTube feed. I don’t think I ever would have been able to break my AI hate, being exposed to that bullshit. That sounds like something from Idiocracy.
What a terrible waste of compute. I can understand how that could make people see AI as just a vehicle to waste resources while making everyone dumber.
