The ways in which we are ‘more connected’ are only quantitative, not qualitative. If you have 1000 people on your Facebook ‘friends’ list, are you ‘more connected’ than the person who only talks to two people, but one of them is their partner/spouse and the other is someone who they’d trust to move a corpse?

Though, what you are talking about there is community. It can be formed around almost anything. Why not a love for a niche writing system? There is an elianscript comm here on Lemmy. Why not one for Gregg?

On the practical side, is there a good way to digitally transmit Gregg? It was meant to be handwritten, which all the lowest-common-denominator technologies that we use most often can have some trouble with.

NFTs are representations of ownership of a digital asset stored on a blockchain. However, as with any digital thing, the represented object can usually just be duplicated, making ownership essentially lacking in the aspect of ‘control’ one usually associates with other forms of ownership, and as with many fad purchases, the value of such things was massively distorted. There was and probably still is no legal structure for that ‘ownership,’ so it’s a bit like ‘owning’ your Lemmy account. As long as you have the password and no one else does, you can control it, if anyone gets the credentials, they can take control and there is little to no legal recourse. So, if you can’t stop other people using duplicates and you can have it taken as easily as any other account, it’s hard to really call it ownership. It’s just a mark in a ledger that says your account is associated with some entry, which is also what registering a title/deed does but with the legal force of the government reinforcing it.

Almost took an interest in learning Gregg but then I found Elian Script and while it’s not a shorthand, I liked it more so come back to it more often.

A newspaper in a niche script is kind of a funny idea though, writing something meant to be broadly informative in a format only the few can understand.

Doki Doki Literature Club I went in blind. I got through the first chapter and got so pissed off that there was no option to be a better friend to hopefully prevent the first negative event. It made me drop the game. Years later I learned about the game from an analytical video essay and I reposed that was probably the War Games style winning move.

The Finals
Another player spouted off unambiguously Nazi BS. I reported them. I doubled back to check. They hadn’t been removed after weeks. I don’t play a game that doesn’t even do the bare minimum of removing the open, unambiguous Nazis.

The Red Lantern/ Heavy Rain These can be grouped. I have a rule which says ‘If I’m not making a choice of what to do in your game, I’m already not playing your game, I’m fighting your game to get the chance to play it, so if you can’t show me something damned quick to make me want to fight for it, it’s time to walk away.’ It pushed me away from Chicken Horse. It kicked me out of Heavy Rain too. The Red Lantern felt like it was mechanically sound but the connective tissue was not there. It’s good design to tell a player, ‘you can sacrifice resource A for a chance at resource B, or don’t. Your call.’ It’s terrible design to say to a player ‘Yes or no?’ with no details, no context clues, or even false context clues and the question actually being in reference to something extremely significant.

Ark
Way back when it was nearer the peak of its popularity, I tried it. I played for a bit. Learned about just how much grind it takes to make even a little crapshack, and how shitty the mechanical design is, and dropped it. Really, there have been many like that, dropped for just not being good/fun. Hell Let Loose was like that. Battle royale games are like that. Civ-likes that aren’t Civ are like that. All the intentional skinner box games are like that.

As the character gets older it seems like in the same way the original gave young people ways to understand their feelings of anger and sadness, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to have a fully serious but carefully done movie or just short film on dealing with what happens when the feeling ‘Horny’ takes the controls.

Maybe because, by and large, floppy dongs are goofy-looking things that have value in shock comedy while vulvas generally aren’t and don’t. There seems to be something innately, or at least deeply culturally, confrontational or violating about a penis, like every time one is revealed it should come with a ‘haHAAA!’ like a melodrama villain, while only the most angry, furriest, and most unkempt of vulvas has anything like that kind of impact.

Many are not surprised. Those that are might be so because most of the other inane BS they spout is met with cheers from the yes men that cling to fame, money, and power like lampreys.

Fuck the -ists and -isms. Consider policies and actions on their merit, not the label. I support things that help people live better lives. Feminism is a freighted word no matter who is using it but no one has right to claim their freighted definition is ‘THE’ definition, not even you. If you want to help women, don’t worry about what people call you, just help.

Gesundheit

The passion drives one to act, not read. The informed are resistant to the emotional manipulation of memes.

The perpetual paradox of political education. Books transmit information. The knowledge they confer will simultaneously make you better informed about how to design a better society, but less and less certain about whether revolution will encourage or even allow that kind of society. Memes transmit emotions, instilling the passion to enact revolution, but leaving you with no knowledge of how to revolt, or how to rebuild afterward.

Yes…ish. Part of the problem is the culture, at least in much of the English speaking world, was moved toward consumerism, where it’s moral or amoral to identify with your purchases. In order to shift away from that culture you have to convince people what they have been doing has been immoral, which is nigh impossible with most people. Most people don’t want to admit they are monsters, and will hate you for making them even consider how their actions might be less than completely righteous and justified.

I was going to say it’s unrealistic because he’s talking using his phone as a phone. I can’t remember the last time I saw someone actually having a conversation aloud where messaging was an option.

Not exactly. Don’t get me wrong. It helps. But the solution to someone breaking into every house on your block can’t stop at just locking your own front door. The marketing industry must end.

As with so many things, it depends on your goal.
If your goal is to make a new, never-before-seen kind of wheel, you definitionally must reinvent the wheel, but at that point, you are doing state of the art research into rolling system dynamics, and probably not hopping onto a message board to ask random strangers about it. You’re heading down the hall to your colleagues lab and consulting fellow experts in the field.
If your goal is to learn the rough outline of how a wheel works, because you want to learn to make wheeled vehicles, maybe you should ‘reinvent’ the wheel at least once, but just as an exercise, not because the wheel you reinvent will be useful. It will be cast aside anyway. You probably just need to know not to put tires on your trains or metal wheels on your F1 cars. If your goal is to reinvent the train, trust the people, who spent years and years of work, testing, reinventing, and retesting the wheel, have proven that round and metal is the way to go for train wheels, and spend your effort on making the train itself. Reinventing the wheels probably won’t make a better train and might stall out the making of the train entirely. If your goal is to get a job as a train designer, showing you know how to send specs to the wheel maker and trusting their work will get you hired where getting lost in the minutiae of designing your own unremarkable wheel will not. The people with the money want trains by the end of the day because they promised the client a week ago they’d be ready by yesterday and forgot to hire you until today.
