Some places in mountain towns the avalanche danger can rise to the level that authorities declare it illegal to leave any building, and violators will be arrested. It’s called an “interlodge”. Basically it’s saying “it’s so dangerous outside that we don’t want to have to mobilize search and rescue just because your dumb ass couldn’t follow the rules”. Interlodges can potentially last for days.

My glasses prescription was really strong, and my corneas are really thin, so LASIK wasn’t an option for me.

Anyone considering this surgery should research the side effects and risks (there are some meta-papers in medical journals that go over these items).

I experienced all of the visual artifacts below in the days/weeks after my surgery. At first they were very bad/noticeable.

After a couple of weeks, the only major issue was still getting halos. (Occasionally I also get the ghosting like in the Netflix image especially if my eyes are very tired).

Those have gradually diminished over the last year, and 99.9% of the time, I don’t even notice that I have the lenses in.

Night driving is a bit more annoying because I still get a lot of halos there, but it’s manageable, and my brain is better at filtering them out.

Overall getting this surgery was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I see better than 20/20, and no longer have to wear glasses/contacts. But I’m saying (to anyone reading this and considering it), go into it with the expectation of some risk (e.g. could cause early cataracts), and give your body time to recover from the surgery and your brain time to adapt & filter out the halos.

Seems like people have been doing this enough that companies have started to disable the functionality. Comcast will just hang up on you nowadays if you spam zero.

My trick lately to speed things up with Comcast is just go straight to cancellations. I always immediately get a human on the phone. I them tell them what I’m actually calling about, and they will then transfer me to the correct department.

I remember watching this when I was 9 years old and feeling vaguely traumatized.

Could be they want to hit a certain category (groceries) on the card. Maybe they are also trying to meet minimum spend on a new card.

For those who shop a lot on Amazon, the Chase Amazon Visa is probably worth it since it always gets 5-6%, but if you don’t have that card, using gift cards to hit a grocery category seems reasonable. Slightly more hassle, but at least you can split purchases on Amazon.

I really enjoyed all 4 seasons.

It’s very character driven, which I know isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I enjoyed seeing characters grow and change through the seasons and loved the way the show moved through different eras of technology.

Google will also try to block you from their RCS servers if they detect you’re rooted, causing your messages to be silently downgraded. It’s pretty bad.

When learning another language, it’s really normal for your comprehension to be way better than your production. Input > output. Just keep talking to people and consuming English media and it will come to you. The more you increase your input, the more fluently and naturally you’ll speak – it won’t sound like you’re speaking from a textbook.

Like you I also struggle with vocab though. What I like to do for focused study is watch a show or some piece of media and pick out some words I want to learn in context and make flashcards from them.

AUR tends to work really well for me. There are binary packages for almost every software that I use. Things do go wrong occasionally, but when they do it’s almost always solvable. AUR packages are just scripts, so you can go and fix the problem yourself and then tell the maintainer how you did it.

My guilty pleasure is the Air Crash Investigation series, or more recently Mentour Pilot on YouTube. It scratches both itches in my brain – the logic / engineer side, and the morbid curiosity & fascination with disaster.

The Roy thing is maybe pushing a little into weird. But if this sort of thing wasn’t normal then there wouldn’t be whole shows, subreddits, etc dedicated to disasters.

Hoping that it gets included soon as the folks developing the Android TV client have said they don’t want to support intro skipping until it’s part of Jellyfin core. Until then the only option is auto skipping and I don’t really want to do that.

While I acknowledge the concept of a “carbon footprint” is complete BS, beef production does have a very high impact on climate change. Just want to point out that fact. I still eat it from time to time though. Yes, beef is high in protein and tasty.

As an aside, I believe as environmentalists, we shouldn’t shame people for doing the “wrong” things IMHO as even the best of us still contribute to the problem in some way. Everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do, and shame doesn’t often change minds. Personally, I try to take my own small steps, but I’m not prepared to live like a hermit. I do try to eat meat less often, and I volunteer a considerable amount of time to lobby for more climate friendly policies. This course of action is what works well for me.

I feel that way. I haven’t felt the need to be pre-emptively aggressive when I post here because in most communities I post to people don’t tend to jump down your throat if you get 1 thing wrong or say 1 thing they don’t like.

It has made me reflect on what kind of person I was when I was posting more on reddit. It’s also made me feel more ok getting on reddit with my one non-banned account occasionally and making a “fire and forget” comment where I’m not quite as obsessed with getting everything right from the get-go. I will try to wait at least a few days or a week before I check for replies. So if somebody happens to get really aggressive with me, it feels less urgent and like it matters less.

I really like the vibe of Lemmy overall, and I hope we can keep it this way.

Good question, actually it all happened a few days before I even got to the airport, so I was aware which flight I was supposed to take. I don’t think that really technically counts as “denied boarding” but it seems like they probably did it because my original flight was very oversold.
